Reading comprehension concepts is a unique, classroom-tested model of reading instruction that breaks new ground by explicitly showing how content knowledge, reading strategies, and motivational support all merge in successful reading instruction. A theoretical perspective (engagement in reading) frames the book and provides a backdrop for its linkage between hands-on science activities and reading comprehension..

there are concepts of reading comprehension:
    1.Theoretical Focus
Reading comprehension concept is teaching framework revolves around the engagement perspective of reading: how engaged reading develops and the classroom contexts and motivational supports that promote it.
    2. Content-Area Focus
Although science is the content area around which reading comprehension has been developed, its basic framework is applicable to other content areas.

    3. Focus on Strategy Instruction
Reading comprehension concepts revolves around a specific set of reading strategies that the National Reading found to be effective. In some current reading comprehension classrooms collaborating teachers implement all aspects of reading comprehension and in other classrooms teachers implement just the strategy instruction component.

    4.Illustrative Vignettes and Cases
Throughout the book vignettes and mini-case studies convey a situated view of instructional practices for reading comprehension and engagement. A detailed case study of one teacher and of the reading progress of her students is featured in one chapter.

Reading comprehension - techniques for improving students' success in extracting useful knowledge from text (Mayer, p 34).

As defined by Partnership for Reading (2005), Reading comprehension is understanding a text that is read, or the process of "constructing meaning" from a text. Comprehension is a "construction process" because it involves all of the elements of the reading process working together as a text is read to create a representation of the text in the reader's mind.

In my opinion, Reading comprehension is the student’s ability to understand what they have been read from the text.

    The concepst of Reading Comprehension
    • Explicit Information is information that can be clearly found "right there" in the text.

    • Drawing Conclusions is when you figure out what a text means by using what you already know and information from the text.

    • Vocabulary in Context means figuring out the meaning of a word by looking at the words and sentences around it.

    • Figurative Language refers to words that mean something other than what they say.

    • Genre is a type of text, such as fiction or nonfiction.

    • Sequence is the order of events or steps in a text.

    • Character refers to the looks, traits, thoughts, actions, and relationships of a person or animal in a text.

    • Setting tells you where and when a story takes place.

    • Plot is the events that make up the main story of a text.

    • Cause & Effect: Cause is the reason why something happens. Effect is what happens as a result.

    • Predicting is deciding what will most likely happen next in what you are reading.

    • Main Idea is the big idea in a text. It tells you what the text is mostly about.

    • Text Features are words and pictures that help organize and highlight information. Examples include headlines, photographs, and captions.

    • Classify & Categorize: Categorize is when you gather together information that is the same or almost the same. Classify is when you give that information a name.

    • Fact & Opinion: Fact is information that someone can prove true or false. Opinion is what someone believes about a subject.

    • Compare & Contrast: Comparing is noticing how two or more things are alike. Contrasting is noticing how they are different.

    • Pronoun Reference means connecting the pronouns in a sentence to the nouns to which they refer.

    • Point of View is the viewpoint from which a story is told to the reader.

    • Voice is how an author expresses his or her personality or attitude through language.

    • Author's Purpose is the reason why an author has written a text for readers.

    • Theme is the message that an author is trying to share with the reader

    READING COMPREHENSION CONCEPTS

Concept maps are visual representations of knowledge and conceptual relationships that show the main ideas and more inclusive concepts at the top of the map and the specific ideas and more concrete ones at the bottom. Concept mapping can be used to generate ideas (brainstorming), design complex structures (long texts, hypermedia, web sites), communicate complex ideas, enhance learning by explicitly integrating new and old knowledge, and assess understanding or diagnose misunderstanding. When applied to reading instruction, they reflect linkage of concepts or facts within a passage and help students generate questions about the content and understand the relationships between concepts better. This study was set out to find out whether the concept maps accompanying the text would have any scaffolding effect on the reading comprehension and recall of propositions by EFL (English as a foreign language) learners.

Types of Comprehension Instruction that Have Evidence of Improving Comprehension
    • Comprehension monitoring
    • Cooperative learning
    • Multiple strategies
    • Mental imagery / mnemonics
    • Graphic organizers
    • Summarization
    • Semantic organizers including:
    o story maps
    o question answering
    o question generation.
    Reading Comprehension Problems
The reading comprehension study speaks of reading problems that have not been corrected in childhood: “...Although [adults with reading comprehension challenges] may be able to perform simple comprehension tasks such as recalling ideas from simple stories and locating a single piece of information in a simple text, they are often unable to combine (integrate and synthesize) information from longer or more complex texts.”
    Reading Comprehension Components Include:
    • word analysis (phonemic awareness, phonics)
    • word recognition
    • fluency
    • word meaning
    • background knowledge
A deficiency in any one of these areas will impede reading comprehension.
Begin Reading Comprehension at the Right Time
According to the study, explicit reading comprehension strategies (as opposed to “incidental” reading comprehension instruction) should begin when a learner has acquired sufficient word recognition mastery, usually no sooner than low intermediate level, GE 3. Beginning readers are focused on word analysis and recognition within simple text that does not require strategies for understanding. How to Improve Reading Comprehension To increase reading comprehension levels, the study suggests using challenging and adult-oriented words for sound-to-symbol word recognition instruction, [as well as for vocabulary enrichment]. Improving word recognition skill improves comprehension. Easy words are often sight words but challenging words require the reader to analyze a word. The study draws this conclusion: "The use of more challenging words appears to lead to a faster rate of growth in reading comprehension."
The Goal of Instruction--To Increase Reading Comprehension
Researchers have found high correlations between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension.
    • To understand the meaning of sentences and paragraphs, learners have to be fluent readers.
    • Hesitations caused by needing to “decode” unfamiliar words tends to interrupt the flow of the author's intended meaning
    • Fluent reading requires that word recognition ability be “automatic” for the particular reading level being understood.
    • Those who have well-developed reading comprehension skills get information independently and accurately from text; they remember, evaluate, and adapt what they read.

Reading comprehension is essentially the ability to understand what has been read. There is little point in being able to pronounce the words on a page if the words mean nothing to you. You can probably read "Sniptops are finbuggle" because you can decode the sounds in the words, but you can't comprehend it because two of the words are nonsense. People with good reading comprehension use several strategies that help them understand the text.
Comprehension: the complex cognitive process involving the intentional interaction between reader and text to extract meaning.

    Reading Comprehension
Comprehension is the reason for reading. If readers can read the words, but not understand the meaning of what they are reading, they are not really reading.
    Strategies to Improve Comprehension
    1. Monitoring Comprehension
Metacognition is defined as "thinking about thinking" and is generally a strong capability of gifted readers. Gifted readers often use metacognition instinctively as they think about why they want to read certain materials and clarify their purpose before they begin. During reading they are likely to monitor how well they are understanding the material and adjust their reading speed to fit the difficulty of the text or "fix up" any comprehension problems they might feel they are having as they read. After reading, they might check their understanding of what they read by "having conversations with themselves".
    2. Using Graphic and Semantic Organizers
Graphic Organizers are known by many names, such as maps, webs, graphs, charts, frames, or clusters. They illustrate concepts, and inter-relationships among concepts, using diagrams. Graphic organizers can help readers focus on concepts and their relationships with other concepts. They provide tools to gifted readers to visually represent relationships in a text.
    3. Answering Questions
Research shows that teacher questioning strongly supports and advances students' learning from reading. Questions
    • Give students a purpose for reading.
    • Focus students' attention on what they are to learn.
    • Help students to think actively as they read.
    • Encourage students to monitor their comprehension.
    • Help students to review content and relate what they have learned to what they already know.
    4. Generating Questions
The intent of this strategy is to teach readers to ask their own questions. Gifted readers are complex thinkers and can ask astounding questions. This is a capability that should be encouraged, and a skill that should be developed. Gifted readers should learn to ask themselves questions that require them to integrate information from different segments of text and from multiple sources.
    5. Recognizing Story Structure
"Story structure" is the way that content and events in a story are organized into a plot. Gifted readers who can recognize story structure have greater appreciation, understanding, and memory for stories. With this strategy, readers learn to identify the categories of content (setting, initiating events, internal reactions, goals, attempts, and outcomes) and how this content is organized into a plot. Readers can use a story map, a type of graphic organizer, to show the sequence of events in simple stories.
    7. Making Use of Prior Knowledge
Gifted readers often draw upon prior knowledge and experience to help them understand what they are reading. Before reading, ask gifted readers what they already know about the content of the selection, what they know about the author, and how the author is likely to present the information. Discuss important vocabulary used in the text and show readers pictures or diagrams to prepare them for what they are about to read. They will get more out of the reading selection by using these preview techniques that review their prior knowledge.
    8. Using Mental Imagery
Gifted readers, especially those that have strong capabilities as visual thinkers, often form mental pictures and images as they read. Readers who visualize during reading understand and remember what they read better than readers who do not visualize. Help your gifted reader learn to form visual images of what they are reading. Urge them to picture a setting, character, or event described in the text.

Reading comprehension is defined as the level of understanding of a text. This understanding comes from the interaction between the words that are written and how they trigger knowledge outside the text.
Proficient reading depends on the ability to recognize words quickly and effortlessly. If word recognition is difficult, students use too much of their processing capacity to read individual words, which interferes with their ability to comprehend what is read.

Comprehension complex activity the printed page itself has no meaning it is only the written paper in the meaning from the mind of the reader.

  20. The Concept of Reading Comprehension
    • Reading
Reading is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them.

When we read, we use our eyes to receive written symbols (letters, punctuation marks and spaces) and we use our brain to convert them into words, sentences and paragraphs that communicate something to us.

Reading can be silent (in our head) or aloud.

    • Comprehension
Comprehension is active and intentional thinking in which the meaning is constructed through interactions between the test and the reader (Durkin: 1973).

 Reading Comprehension is the construction the meaning of a written text through a reciprocal interchange of ideas between the reader and the message in a particular text (Harris & Hodges, 1995)
It’s mean that reading comprehension is learning from text. The reader interacts with the printed material to build new meaning. A relatively good reader can construct more, higer level meanings from a wider diversity of texts, than a relatively poor reader.
    Reading Strategies
Here are some strategies for improving your comprehension skills.
    • Skim: read for the brief idea or overview.
    • Scan: read for specific details or a specific reason.
    • KWL: determine what you Know about the topic, what you Want to know, and what you Learned.
    • Skip: if you don't understand a word or section, keep reading ahead. Come back to the section or word again and try to figure out the meaning. Use a dictionary if necessary.
    • Look for headings, subtitles and keywords.
    • Read out loud: children read out loud when they first start reading. You can too. Get comfortable hearing your English voice.
    • Create timelines or charts: reorganize what you read in a different format.
    • Rewrite in a different tense.
    • Rewrite in a different format: for example, rewrite an article in letter or list form.
    • Illustrate: if you think you’re a visual learner, sketch images or an infographic related to what you read.
Using a strategy helps students build interlinked knowledge that is taught. For each strategic reading that have been frequently discussed by other (Paris, Wasik & Turner, 1991)

For example when we were reading the newspaper or looking for a job in classified advertisements, or want to choose a holiday destination and look through different travel brochures, or read the manual of some appliance to see how it functions. In everyday life we come across different written texts, which we read in order to find some information or we read them just for pleasure. But when we read in life, we mainly do it in our mother tongue. As long as we can read and understand a text and find the needed information, we do not pay attention to how we do it.

Reading is the action or practice of a person who reads.

Comprehension is the act or fact of grasping the meaning, nature, or importance of; understanding.

As defined by Partnership for Reading (2005), Reading comprehension is understanding a text that is read, or the process of "constructing meaning" from a text. Comprehension is a "construction process" because it involves all of the elements of the reading process working together as a text is read to create a representation of the text in the reader's mind.

    READING COMPREHENSION CONCEPT

Reading is an individual activity to look at and understand the meaning of written or printed words or symbol and it is a complex cognitive process of some body and some time on certain occasion a person will read out loud for the benefit of other listener. According to Saleh (1991:41)”reading contends not only assigning English sounds to written words but also understanding what is written.
Comprehension is the power of understanding or its about our ability to understand well about something.
From all the explanation above we get the important summarizing that is reading comprehension means the process of understanding about the text and the purpose is to measure that we know well about the information in the text, according to Bond and Tunker (1995)” reading comprehension is the recognition of printed symbol which serve as simulated to the recall built up through the reader past experience”. It means reading with power of understanding of printed symbol.
In reading comprehension practice usually the reader analyze or identifying the intrinsic component in the text such us the pattern of language that use, the way of story of the text, the character in text for story telling, or what the story tell about, the meaning of the words in the text, etc.
The readers may use morpheme, semantics, syntax and context clues to identify the meaning of unknown words. Readers integrate the words they have read into their existing framework of knowledge or schema.

    • Reading is the process of constructing meaning from written texts. It is a complex skill requiring the coordination of a number of interrelated sources of information (Anderson et al., 1985).

    • Comprehension is understanding and interpretation of what we are reading about. To be able to accurately understand written material, think deeply about what we have read. One big part of comprehension is having a sufficient vocabulary, or knowing the meanings of enough words.

    • So, Reading Comprehension is understanding the text which has been read. One strategy for reading comprehension is the technique called SQ3R. This stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review.
-In order to get an understanding of the text, you should survey the chapters. This consists of quickly looking at the title, headings and any subheadings. Look at any end of chapter questions as well.
-While surveying, you ask questions about the topics you have scanned, such as, "What did my teacher say about this chapter?"
-The next thing is to begin reading. In a chapter book, you would read the majority of the words. In a textbook, just read quickly for the key words.
-After reading a portion or section of the book, recite what you have read out loud. By orally summarizing what you just read it helps to cement the content in your memory.
-The last technique is to review what you have read again. By writing down key facts from the chapter and reviewing it, you will better understand the information.

      READING COMPREHENSION CONCEPT

Reading comprehension is defined as the level of understanding of a text. This understanding comes from the interaction between the words that are written and how they trigger knowledge outside the text. .[1]
Proficient reading depends on the ability to recognize words quickly and effortlessly.[2][3] If word recognition is difficult, students use too much of their processing capacity to read individual words, which interferes with their ability to comprehend what is read.
Many educators in the USA believe that students need to learn to analyze text (comprehend it) even before they can read it on their own, and comprehension instruction generally begins in pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten. But other US educators consider this reading approach to be completely backward for very young children, arguing that the children must learn how to decode the words in a story through phonics before they can analyze the story itself.
During the last century comprehension lessons usually comprised students answering teachers' questions, writing responses to questions on their own, or both.[citation needed] The whole group version of this practice also often included "Round-robin reading", wherein teachers called on individual students to read a portion of the text (and sometimes following a set order). In the last quarter of the 20th century, evidence accumulated that the read-test methods assessed comprehension more than they taught it. The associated practice of "round robin" reading has also been questioned and eliminated by many educators.
      Instead of using the prior read-test method, research studies have concluded that there are much more effective ways to teach comprehension. Much work has been done in the area of teaching novice readers a bank of "reading strategies," or tools to interpret and analyze text.[4][5] There is not a definitive set of strategies, but common ones include summarizing what you have read, monitoring your reading to make sure it is still making sense, and analyzing the structure of the text (e.g., the use of headings in science text). Some programs teach students how to self monitor whether they are understanding and provide students with tools for fixing comprehension problems.}

    READING COMPREHENSION CONCEPTS

Reading is one of the four language skills.
Henry Guntur Tarigan argues that "Reading is a process that is carried and used by readers to get the message about to be delivered by the author through the medium of words or written language" 2. A process which requires that a group of words which is a unity will be seen in glimpses, and that the meaning of individual words will be known. If this is not met, then the message is explicit and implied will not be captured or understood, and the reading process is not performing well.

Goodman, revealed that reading comprehension is a process of reconstructing the message contained in the text where the reconstruct the message was layered, interactive, and place the processes formation and testing hipotesis.
That’s mean , while reading one excavation process of text messages, interact with meaning contained in the text, then the reader to make and test hypothesis. The results of hypothesis testing was used as the basis for interesting
    conclusion.

    * Activate prior knowledge, and connect the applicable prior experiences to the reading (if students don't have the requisite background knowledge about a topic, they will be unable to comprehend)
    * Set Purposes
    * Predict
    * Decode Text — identify word and sentence meanings
    * Summarize — bring meaning forward throughout the reading, building on prior information to create new and fuller meanings
    * Visualize — see characters, settings, situations, ideas, mental models
    * Question
    * Monitor understanding - the most salient difference between good and poor readers is that good

By reading, one Can you relax, interacting with the Feelings and thoughts, obtain information, and improve the science knowledge. According to Bowman (1991: 265) reading is an appropriate means to promotes a Lifelong Learning (life-long learning). By teaching the children how to read means giving children a future these which provides a technique to explore how "the world" Wherever he chose, and Provide the opportunity to get a goal in life.

Reading is a way to get information from something that was written. Reading involves the introduction of symbols That make up a language. Read and Hear Is the second most common way to get information. Information gleaned from reading cans include entertainment, ESPECIALLY Pls reading fiction or humor.

Comprehension requires the reader to be an active constructor of meaning. Reading research has demonstrated that readers do not simply "perceive" the meaning that is IN a text. In fact, expert readers co-construct meaning WITH a text. The research base shows that reading is a "transaction" in which the reader brings purposes and life experiences to bear to converse with the text. This meeting of the reader and the text results in the meaning that is comprehension. Comprehension always attends to what is coded or written in the text, but it also depends upon the reader's background experiences, purposes, feelings, and needs of the moment. That's why we can read the same book or story twice and it will have very different meanings for us. We, as readers, are an equal and active partner with the text in the meaning-making process of comprehension.

Reading comprehension is a complex process in which the reader uses his ability to find information, it means that the reader must be able to comprehend the meaning of printed words. Some definitions of reading comprehension given by some researchers are provided below:

    - Eksay in Amir (2004: 6) states, “Reading comprehension in general is viewed in this research as the resulting from the four way interaction between readers, text, task, structured activity. The success of this interaction depends of the availability of quality of content and strategist schemata to new problem solving situations.
