SKIMMING AND SCANNING READING STRATEGY

67 comments:

  1. Skimming
    you need to :
-Get the general idea (or "gist") of a text. The way to do this is not by reading every word.
-Try reading quickly through the table of contents, the preface, and the index, then select from the chapter headings. You can then read the first and last paragraphs, and perhaps the first sentence of each of the other paragraphs.

    Scanning
    You need to :
    - skim read material to get the general picture. You scan when looking for specific information.
    - need to find specific details on a topic for an assignment or a task that your lecturer has set. There is little point in skimming a whole book for this purpose.
    - You should scan the text for words related to the topic.
    - You can run your eyes down the page looking for these expressions - in chapter headings or sub-headings, or in the text itself.

  2. Skimming is used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text. When you read the newspaper, you're probably not reading it word-by-word, instead you're scanning the text. Skimming is done at a speed three to four times faster than normal reading. People often skim when they have lots of material to read in a limited amount of time. Use skimming when you want to see if an article may be of interest in your research.

There are many strategies that can be used when skimming. Some people read the first and last paragraphs using headings, summarizes and other organizers as they move down the page or screen. You might read the title, subtitles, subheading, and illustrations. Consider reading the first sentence of each paragraph. This technique is useful when you're seeking specific information rather than reading for comprehension. Skimming works well to find dates, names, and places. It might be used to review graphs, tables, and charts.

Scanning is a technique you often use when looking up a word in the telephone book or dictionary. You search for key words or ideas. In most cases, you know what you're looking for, so you're concentrating on finding a particular answer. Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases. Scanning is also used when you first find a resource to determine whether it will answer your questions. Once you've scanned the document, you might go back and skim it.

When scanning, look for the author's use of organizers such as numbers, letters, steps, or the words, first, second, or next. Look for words that are bold faced, italics, or in a different font size, style, or color. Sometimes the author will put key ideas in the margin.

Reading off a computer screen has become a growing concern. Research shows that people have more difficulty reading off a computer screen than off paper. Although they can read and comprehend at the same rate as paper, skimming on the computer is much slower than on paper.
    Skimming
Sometimes you need to get the general idea or gist of a text. The way to do this is not by reading every word. Few text books were written with your specific course in mind. So you need to adapt the material to your particular purposes, given the course and the task at hand. Skimming is the sort of reading which would be appropriate if your tutor asked you to read several books and articles for the next tutorial. She would not expect you to be able to recite it word for word, but she will want you to be able to discuss the issues raised.
You might try reading quickly through the table of contents, the preface and the index, then selecting from the chapter headings. You can then read the first and last paragraphs, and perhaps the first sentence of each of the other paragraphs. Don't forget to check any diagrams and figures. You should get about 50% of the meaning from all this and you are then in a good position to see if you need to employ scanning or detailed reading.
    Scanning
You skim read material to get the general picture. To find out precise information you will need to practise the technique of scanning. You may need to find out specific details of a topic for an assignment or a task that your lecturer has set. There is little point in skimming a whole book for this purpose. You should identify a few key expressions which will alert you to the fact that your subject is being covered. You can the

Scanning and Skimming are useful skills, especially in our endeavors this summer.
Scanning involves a process of quickly searching reading materials in order to
locate specific bits of information. When scanning you don't start from the beginning
and read to the end. Instead, what you do is jump around in the text, trying to find
the information you need. You probably already scan the TV guide, the phone book,
or the dictionary, but it is possible to improve your scanning skills. Effective scanning
techniques can be useful in any academic setting.
Skimming is another technique whose purpose is to gain a quick overview
in order to identify the main points. When skimming, you will often skip words,
sentences, and paragraphs. When you are satisfied you have a general understanding
of the author's main ideas and key points, you put the reading material aside. Skimming
can serve as a substitute for careful reading. Some useful techniques are to read the
first and last sentences of paragraphs, the introduction, and the summary if one is
provided. When examples are given, you may want to read a few of them until you
understand the concepts they are meant to illustrate. When skimming a textbook,
quickly note the title, subheadings, italicized words, boldface print, and illustrations.
Skimming will not serve as a substitute for careful reading, but it can serve you
well when you have put off until tomorrow what you should have done yesterday!
Both scanning and skimming can help you locate specific pieces of information
and gain an overview of the main points in an article or text. Do not rely on these
techniques for more sophisticated college courses, but they will come in handy if
you are pressed for time and working under a deadline!

Skimming and Scanning For Better Speed Reading

A big element of effective speed-reading is only reading those pieces of text that you actually need to read and not reading that which you don't need to read.

To help you find the information you actually need to read and to avoid the information you don't need to read it is important to practice skimming and scanning when reading text.

Skimming and scanning are actually two very different ways of going through text. Scanning while speed reading is the process of looking for a specific piece of information, like looking up a word in the dictionary for example. You don't read every word; you "scan" through the text to look for what you want and stop once you have found and absorbed the information you are looking for.

Skimming on the other hand involves going through the book page by page just looking at chapter titles and sub titles and categories and pictures and diagrams to get a general feel for the text and its layout to familiarize yourself with its structure. And to also help get an overview of the subject matter the book is on. And to get a general impression of what the text contains.

To help you be more effective and get the most out of both skimming and scanning text it can be useful to know what your purpose is for reading the book. Knowing why you are reading a book and what you are looking for will help to get your brain alert for any information that your are looking for in the text as you read.

Skimming refers to the process of reading only main ideas within a passage to get an overall impression of the content of a reading
    selection.

    How to Skim:

    * Read the title.

    * Read the introduction or the first paragraph.

    * Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.

    * Read any headings and sub-headings.

    * Notice any pictures, charts, or graphs.

    * Notice any italicized or boldface words or phrases.

    * Read the summary or last paragraph.

Scanning is a reading technique to be used when you want to find specific information quickly. In scanning you have a question in your mind and you read a passage only to find the answer, ignoring unrelated information.

    How to Scan:

    * State the specific information you are looking for.

    * Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what clues you might use to help you locate the answer. For example, if you were looking for a certain date, you would quickly read the paragraph looking only for numbers.

    * Use headings and any other aids that will help you identify which sections might contain the information you are looking for.

    * Selectively read and skip through sections of the passage.

Reading strategies: scanning and skimming reading
Scanning : looking through a text to find keywords and phrases that are likely to indicate the specific information that you are seeking, then reading just this piece of the text. Reading purpose are look for specific information when you know how to locate it by following a procedure and search for specific information that may be somewhere a text. Examples: look up the meaning of a word in a dictionary, check particular details of an incident reported in a newspaper article.

Skimming: reading just those parts of a text that are most likely to indicate what the authors are talking about at different points in order to gain an overview of the content. Reading purposes are to look quickly through a text to see what it is about before deciding to read it or read quickly through a text to gain an overview of its content. Examples: see whether an academic article is going to be relevant for your task. and read through a new recipe or read a front-line text which is relevant but not central to your task.

This used if the reader only wants a review or an overview of the material. According to Smith and Johnson (1980), skimming is reading technique for getting information to satisfy certain reading purpose rapidly.

    2. Scanning is also a technique for finding specific information without reading the entire selection, (Smith Johnson, 1902:402). When a readers need to locate specific information, he might read carefully to find the information that they read.

  27. Answer.com (2012). Scanning refers to the act of briefly reading through the passage. You do not go into detail to interpret every single detail. The purpose of scanning is to just simply know what the passage is talking about, who are the characters, and some other information that is more of general.
Skimming refers to reading through a passage with great precision. The reader will be looking for clues and evidence so as to help him interpret what exactly in detail was happening and etc.

  40. Skimming and scanning reading strategy

    Skimming

    Skimming is a quick reading:
    - to know the general meaning of a passage - to know how the passage is organized, that is, the structure of the text
    - to get an idea of the intention of the writer

Skimming is a more complex task than scanning because it requires the reader to organize and remember some of the information given by the author, not just to locate it.

It can be concluded that skimming to get general meaning or to get the idea of the text. Skimming is reading quickly through the table content, the preface and we select from the chapter headings.

    Scanning

Scanning is a quick reading, focusing on locating specific information. Scanning involves quick eye movements, not necessarily linear in fashion, in which the eyes wander until the reader finds the piece of information needed.

Scanning is used when a specific piece of information is required, such as a name, date, symbol, formula, or phrase, is required. The reader knows what the item looks like and so, knows when he has located what he was searching for. It is assumed then, that very little information is processed into long-term memory or even for immediate understanding because the objective is simply matching.

It can be concluded that scanning is a quick reading. Need to find specific details. We can run our eyes down to get the information that we need. It is for an assignment or a tasks that our teacher has set.

    1. Monash university. Language and learning online: scanning and skimming.

      Scanning :
You skim read material to get the general picture. You scan when looking for specific information. You may need to find specific details on a topic for an assignment or a task that your lecturer has set. There is little point in skimming a whole book for this purpose. You should scan the text for words related to the topic. You can run your eyes down the page looking for these expressions - in chapter headings or sub-headings, or in the text itself.
      Skimming
Sometimes you need to get the general idea (or "gist") of a text. The way to do this is not by reading every word. Try reading quickly through the table of contents, the preface, and the index, then select from the chapter headings. You can then read the first and last paragraphs, and perhaps the first sentence of each of the other paragraphs.

Based on monash university’s view I conclude that Skimming and Scanning :
Skimming is a technique to get the main ideas of test quickly, such as newspaper, novel, etc. you do not need to read all words in that paper, imagine that you are looking for some information in books and you do not have much time, should you read it word by word, if the book is more than 200-250 pages, should you read all words in the book ? so that’s why people use skimming, in skimming people will read faster than usual it will be three or four times faster. The puposes in skimming are knowing the topic quickly, knowing people’s opinion, to get important points that needed without read all words in that books. Skimming is well to find dates, names, and places. It might be used to review graphs, tables, and charts.

Scanning is a technique to get specific information from the text. Commonly, is used when people already know about the specific information that they are looking for. so that they really concentrate on finding a particular answer. People use their eyes quickly to get the information for getting specific words or phrases. that use when people looking up a word in telephone book, dictionary, etc.

      Strategy for skimming :
      - Read title, sub title, subheading to get the important points of the text.
      - Read the first sentence of each paragraph
      - Pay attention to the illustration of the text
      - Notice any picture, charts, graphs
      - Don’t read word by word. Find the key words of the text

      Strategy in scanning
      - Pay attention in number, alphabet, chronological order, etc.
      - Find the words that different with the others (italic, bold, etc)
      - Selectively read and skip through sections of the passage

Skimming is used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text. There are many strategies that can be used when skimming; read the first and last paragraphs using headings, summarizes, and might read the title, subtitles, subheading, and illustrations.
So, it can be concluded that skimming is used when we want to get general information of the text. We do not need to read it line by line but we just read the important thing that we need in order to get general information of the text. We can read the titile, subheading, and also summarize of the text.
Example : when we review the graphs, tables or charts.

Scanning refers to reading through material to find specific information.
It can be said that scanning is one of the technique in reading to determine the specific information which will answer our question/fulfill our need about the text. Again, in scanning we do not need to read line by line, we should read on the words/sentences which has different style, colour, or in the bold type, italic, in the organization of number, steps such as first, second, etc.
Example : when we read a newspaper in order to know the price of specific car that we want.

scanning - looking through a text to find keywords and phrases that are likely to indicate the specific information that you are seeking, then reading just this piece of the text. there are the ways to scanning :
      1. look for specific information when you know how to locate it by following a procedure.
      2. search for specific information that may be somewhere a text.

      · skimming - reading just those parts of a text that are most likely to indicate what the authors are talking about at different points in order to gain an overview of the content. there are the ways to skimming :
      1. look quickly through a text to see what it is about before deciding to read it.
      2. read quickly through a text to gain an overview of its content.

      so, in my opinion :
-scanning is reading all of the text to find specific information from the text. and the strategies are : look for a specific information and try to find specific information from the text.

-skimming is looking the text quickly and focus on the authors talking about. and the strategies are : read the text quickly to see the text and take an overview before deciding to read it.

read all of the material. They’re different in the way you go about each.

In scanning, you usually have a question to, or something specific to look for. It might be a
telephone number, a particular quotation in a book, or supporting facts to use in a discussion you’re having. When you scan, your goal is to find just the information you want. When you’ve found it,you’re finished reading.

In skimming, your purpose is quite different. You may be interested in the “gist” of an article, or you may want to sample a book in the library before deciding to take it out. When you skim, you
alternate read and glance, and your goal is to obtain an impression of the whole.
Based on saint martin’s view I take the view that : Skimming and Scanning

People use their eyes quickly to get the information for getting specific words or phrases. that use when people looking up a word in telephone book, dictionary, etc.it they find the specific information that they are looking for, they usually stop reading.

    SKIMMING AND SCANNING READING STRATEGY

based on the article the learning network sites.
skimming is used to quickly find the main ideas of a text, and that skimming is often done at a speed three to four times faster than normal critical reading speed. Then scanning is a technique they already use, for instance, when looking up a word in a dictionary or trying to find a specific phrase or number on a printed page.

it can be concluded that skimming is one of strategy of reading which involves a process of getting important point of one text, for example read on magazines (quickly to discover which articles that would like to be read in more detail); then scanning is one of strategy of reading of finding a definite information, for example looking a difficult word at dictionary.

The goal is to find the information what we want. After our question have answered, we are finished reading.

  49. Reading Skills Scanning and Skimming
Martin Malcolm, Skimming and scanning are two techniques that can help readers quickly gain information from a book, magazine, newspaper or website without having to read every word. When used well, both skimming and scanning can save readers time and allow them to study more efficiently. Skimming is useful when you have to decide if a long piece of writing is worth close study. Skimming can also be an effective way of quickly reviewing something that has been read previously, so that the reader can recall the most significant parts.
skimming is often done at a speed three to four times faster than normal critical reading speed.
Kenneth Beare, scanning is used to discover required information to complete a given task such as making a decision about what to watch on TV, or which museum to visit while visiting a foreign city.
So, my opinion scanning is when one looks down and around a page quickly and efficiently searching for important words, facts or phrases to find specific information.

  53. according to virgina polytechnic institute and state university(2009): Skimming involves searching for the main ideas by reading the first and last paragraph, noting other organizational cues, such as summaries, used by the author.
Scanning involves running your eyes down the page looking for specific facts or key words and phrases.
    so, its mean that
skimming is reading the text to get main idea by reading the first and the last sentence of paragraph, scanning is reading the text by looking for the specific key word.

My opinion about scanning is read a text only look for specific information like keyword that may be indicate of the information.
For example: read a newspaper article.

My opinion about skimming is decide we read a text, we just read the part of text that the writers talking about or just see the point of the text.
For example: read in magazine articles

  55. Skimming is reading a text to get the gist, the basic overall idea, rather than concentrating on absorbing all the details. Or a way of quickly looking over an article or book to get a rough idea of what it is about. Skimming is not the same thing as fast reading; instead, it is selective reading of a few parts of a text. In real life, people often skim to decide whether or not they want to read something. In class this is a useful pre-reading exercise before reading an article or a book. So,,, we skim read a newspaper article just to get a quick overview, or a text could be skimmed to see whether it's worth reading in detail.

Scanning a text is a reading technique where the reader looks for specific information rather than trying to absorb all the information. you want specific information usually and so look for something that is convenient for your journey plans- when you do this, you are scanning. .

  57. Based on Chintana. 2005. Skimming refers to the process of reading only main ideas within a passage to get an overall impression of the content of a reading selection.
    How to Skim:
    * Read the title.
And then, Scanning is a reading technique to be used when you want to find specific information quickly.

The Definition of Skimming and Scanning Strategies
Martin Malcom ( 2005 : 6) states that Skimming strategy is reading strategy that involves looking through a book or article and reading only the main parts. From the definition, it can be assumed that skimming is we read quickly to get general sense of sense or the book and we just read part of a text, and to get the mind idea of the author means. For Examples: contents, headings, introductions, summaries and conclusions. With skimming, you are trying to get a general impression of the material.

Martin Malcom (2005 : 6)states that Scanning is a very quick search for some important points for specific information. In this kind of reading, your eyes move quickly over the words for figures until you find the exact information you are looking for. As your eyes move down the page, keep in mind what you are looking for and ignore everything else. From the definition, it can be assumed that scanning is reading strategy to find out the keywords that are likely to indicate the specific infomation that you are looking for and you quickly to understand the topic and the main points. For examples: finding a name in the telephone book, looking up a word in a dictionary.
