    Narrative , Descriptive

Narrative composition appeals to one of humankind's basic instincts, the impulse to share stories. Sometimes the aim of the story-teller is simply to entertain, to provide a moment of escape from the business of the day or the horrors of the night, but sometimes the aim of the story-teller is to instruct, to help others in their understanding of something. The best part of teaching in this way is that our listeners' natural resistance to heeding the words of others is low and they are not always aware that they are being taught anything until it's too late – we've got them.
The skills needed to narrate a story well are not entirely the same as the skills needed to write a good essay. Some wonderful short fiction writers are not particularly good essayists and vice versa. Still, it is useful to look at those elements that make up a good narrative and know how to apply what we learn toward making our essays as dramatic as possible whenever that is appropriate.
Review, also, the elements of the Personal Essay, as the personal essay and the narrative essay have much in common.
    Descriptive
The ability to describe something convincingly will serve a writer well in any kind of essay situation. The most important thing to remember is that your job as writer is to show, not tell. If you say that the tree is beautiful, your readers are put on the defensive: "Wait a minute," they think. "We'll be the judge of that! Show us a beautiful tree and we'll believe." Do not rely, then, on adjectives that attempt to characterize a thing's attributes. Lovely, exciting, interesting – these are all useful adjectives in casual speech or when we're pointing to something that is lovely, etc., but in careful writing they don't do much for us; in fact, they sound hollow.
Let nouns and verbs do the work of description for you. With nouns, your readers will see; with verbs, they will feel. In the following paragraph, taken from George Orwell's famous anti-imperialist essay, "Shooting an Elephant," see how the act of shooting the elephant delivers immense emotional impact. What adjectives would you expect to find in a paragraph about an elephant? big? grey? loud? enormous? Do you find them here? Watch the verbs, instead. Notice, too, another truth about description: when time is fleeting, slow down the prose. See how long the few seconds of the shooting can take in this paragraph. You can read the entire text of George Orwell's story by clicking HERE, and you can read additional essays by this famous author of Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty Four at "The Political Writings of George Orwell."

Difference Between Expository,Produk and Recount Text

Even garments can contain functional recount texts.
Expository and functional recount texts are somewhat similar in purpose -- they both are designed to give information to the reader. However, while expository topics are informative, they work more like a news report, while functional recount texts operate more like a set of instructions. As a result, the organization and interpretation of each can end up working differently.

    Expository Texts
Most of the text we read is expository. Articles in magazines, news stories and nonpersuasive speeches are examples. Anything that explains or defines a concept or process is "exposing" it to the reader and would fit under this category. Often, these texts are accompanied by pictures or charts to give further explanation.

    Narrative/Descriptive

To write a narrative essay, you’ll need to tell a story (usually about something that happened to you) in such a way that he audience learns a lesson or gains insight.
To write a descriptive essay, you’ll need to describe a person, object, or event so vividly that the reader feels like he/she could reach out and touch it.

Tips for writing effective narrative and descriptive essays:

Tell a story about a moment or event that means a lot to you--it will make it easier for you to tell the story in an interesting way!
    • Get right to the action! Avoid long introductions and lengthy descriptions--especially at the beginning of your narrative.
    • Make sure your story has a point! Describe what you learned from this experience.
    • Use all five of your senses to describe the setting, characters, and the plot of your story. Don't be afraid to tell the story in your own voice. Nobody wants to read a story that sounds like
    Using Concrete Details for Narratives
Effective narrative essays allow readers to visualize everything that's happening, in their minds. One way to make sure that this occurs is to use concrete, rather than abstract, details.
    Concrete Language… Abstract Language…
…makes the story or image seem clearer and more real to us. ...makes the story or image difficult to visualize.
…gives us information that we can easily grasp and perhaps empathize with. …leaves your reader feeling empty, disconnected, and possibly confused.
The word “abstract” might remind you of modern art. An abstract painting, for example, does not normally contain recognizable objects. In other words, we can't look at the painting and immediately say "that's a house" or "that's a bowl of fruit." To the untrained eye, abstract art looks a bit like a child's finger-painting--just brightly colored splotches on a canvas.
Avoid abstract language—it won’t help the reader understand what you're trying to say!
Examples :Abstract: It was a nice day. Concrete: The sun was shining and a slight breeze blew across my face.

NARRATIVE, DESCRIPTIVE, EXPOSITORY, PROCEDURE, AND RECOUNT TEXTS
According to Daisy (2012.1) Narrative text is words-in-a-row that tell a story. It includes fiction and non-fiction, but excludes most poetry. Expository text tells a factual story. Newspapers, some magazines and text books are examples of expository text. Reading narrative text is a somewhat different skill from reading expository text, but both hinge around one major component: practice, coupled with a second component: enjoyment. Most readers gravitate toward material they like to read. They are more likely to retain information from subject matter they like. Then Dudie Nurmansyah (2009.1) assumes that Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing. And Dwi Wenny Wulandar (2012.1) explains that Procedure text is a text that is designed to describe how something is achieved through a sequence of actions or steps. It explains how people perform different processes in a sequence of steps. This text uses simple present tense, often imperative sentences. It also uses the temporal conjunction such as first, second, then, next, finally, etc. Recount is a text which retells events or experiences in the past. Its purpose is either to inform or to entertain the audience.
From those opinions can be concluded that NARRATIVE amuses/entertains the readers and to tell a stor (for example: Malin Kundang Story). DESCRIPTIVE text is text that describes a particular person, place or thing in detail (for example: The Situation of Jakarat .) EXPOSITORY text is text that reveals the readers that something is the important case (for example: Controlling Children Using Computer.) . RECOUNT text is text that. retells something that happened in the past and to tell a series of past event (for example: My Holiday was Fantastic). PROCEDURE text is text that shows and helps readers how to do or make something completely (for example: How To Make Ice Cream).

1.Thomas S. Kane (2000: 363-364) states that A Narrative is a meaningful sequence of events told in words. It is sequential in that the events are ordered, not merely random. Sequence always involves an arrangement in time (and usually other arrangements as well). A straightforward movement from the first event to the last constitutes the simplest chronology. So it can be assumed that Narrative is a telling of the story or text of a sequence events. For example : the story of Golden eggs.

2.Kane (2000:352) states that Descriptive is about sensory experience—how something looks, sounds, tastes. Mostly it is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds of perception. So it can be assumed that Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or thing is like. And the purpose is to describe a thing or person.
    For example : “ My Cat ”

3.Expository text: Usually nonfiction, informational text. This type of is notorganized around a story like structure but is instead organized based on the purposes and goals of the author or by content. Examples include news articles, informational books, instruction manuals, or textbooks. For Example : “Watch your Kids While Watching TV”

      • Narrative text is a text focusing specific participants, its social function is to tell stories or past events and entertain the readers.
      • Descriptive text is a text which says what a person, place, or a thing like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place or thing.

But narrative text is a text only to tell stories and events, like in a story book: myth, folklore, etc. And the example of narrative text: Cinderella. - Narrative

According to Labov ( 1972) via Riessman, Catherine K.(1993: 17) assumes all narratives are stories about a specific past event, and they have common properties. Narrative told past event, beginning with “once upon a time” and ending “they lived happily ever after”.

It can be assumed that the narrative text is a text which contains about story (fiction/nonfiction/tales/folktales/fables/myths/epic) and its plot consists of climax of the story (complication) then followed by the resolution, all narrative story do in the past and has happy ending

      Example of narrative text:

Narrative is also about a beautiful princess, a handsome prince, a kingdom, a gueen, and fairies. Story about Cinderella.

      - Recount

Gerrot and Wignell(1994:194) define recount as a text retell events for the purpose of informing or entertaining.

It can be assumed that recount is a text retells events for the purpose of informing or entertaining. The purpose of recount is retelling something that happened in the past.

      - Descriptive

Larson (1984) defines a descriptive text is a text which lists the characteristics of something. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

It can be assumed that descriptive is a text which say what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.

      Example:

      - The details of a location

      - Procedure
Gerot and Wignell, (1994:206) state that procedure text is to describe how something is accomplished through a sequence of actions or steps.

According to Derewianka (1990:24), procedure text is a text which tells us information of making or doing something and how things work through several steps and directions.
