Reading comprehension - techniques for improving students' success in extracting useful knowledge from text (Mayer, p 34)
Ways to teach comprehension based on Bloom's Taxonomy include concept maps, analogies, inquiry and expository strategies.
Concept Maps • Concept maps, which are sometimes referred to as ideas and/or concepts. Assist in organizing knowledge. For example, students learning about how apples grow. Students may make concept and linking with the apple trees, soil, sunlight, rain and fertilizer. Analogies • Analogies transfer meaning from something that a person already knows to new knowledge, which aids in comprehension. For example, students who already know how flowers grow. Students may compare the way flowers grow with the way that apples grow, such as flowers bud from seeds/bulbs as apples grow from trees that begin from seeds. Inquiry • The inquiry strategy, which is sometimes referred to as discovery, allows to generate own comprehension. For example, students learning about how flowers grow and the students may choose seeds or bulbs, soil, fertilizers, sunlight and the water to discover by themselves how different types of flowers grow and to adapt their environment. Expository • The expository strategy is similar to inquiry or discovery; however, rather than students generating their own comprehension, the instructor presents the concept and leads students through the activity. For example, an instructor teaching about flower growth would explain the concept, present examples and supply students with seeds or bulbs, soil and so on; it is a controlled environment.
22. Tia Pramaditha.AR 0825055 The explanation of reading comprehension concepts according to Ann Logsdon Reading comprehension is strategies to understand students’ read and to remember details of what they've read. In my opinion reading comprehension is refers to student’s ability to understand the information he is reading. Understanding requires that we know the words (vocabulary) and the concepts (or meaning) behind the words. Examples: Consider this sentence, ¿Entiendes estas palabras? If you don't know any of these words, you can read them, but you don't understand any of them--you have no reading comprehension. However, if you speak Spanish and know what the words mean, then you understand--comprehend--the sentence. (By the way, it says, "Do you understand these words?") Talking with your student and reading to them builds vocabulary. Point out words that they will recognize—on signs, in books or newspapers. Pick a “word of the day” and see how many times your child can find the special word for the day. 1. Preview: Look through the pages of your reading passage and read the headings of the chapter and any sections dividing the chapter. Read the first and last paragraph in each section. View the illustrations in each section. Read the captions under the pictures and take a few minutes to look at charts, graphs, or maps. 2. Question: Think about the information you learned in the Preview. Ask yourself questions about it. Think about what do you already know about ideas you saw during your Preview. What do you think are main points that will be raised in the chapter? What do you expect to learn from reading this material? 3. Read: Read the passage. If there are ideas seem important, make a note of them on paper. If the book belongs to you, consider making notes in the margins and highlight important parts in the book. If you just can't imagine writing in your book, make notes on paper. 4. Reflect: Take time to reflect on what you have read. How are the passages or chapters inter-related? How does the information fit into things you have already learned? What new information did you learn? Did the passage include the information you expected it to cover? Was there information that surprised you? 5. Recite: Think about the material. Discuss it with someone else or write down the main points you learned. Generally, writing information down by hand will improve memory of the material. If writing is a problem for you, consider brief notes or discuss the material with other students. It is important to summarize the material in writing using your own words. Explain it aloud to someone else or recite your notes aloud to yourself. Consider using a graphic organizer to increase your understanding of how concepts in the reading relate to each other. 6. Review: Consider the main points of the material. Were your questions answered? Do you feel that the writer's points are fully understood? Reference : Logsdom,Ann.2012.Strategy Improves Reading Comprehension. According to Gough and Tunmer (1986, 228) explanation of reading comprehension is “the joint product of printed word identiļ¬cation and listening comprehension”
Based on the explanation above, I assume that reading comprehension is “the ability to understand relationship between information in a text and listening comprehension.
Example : A reader has never been to the zoo, but the concept of a zoo can be an easy one for a child who has seen wild animals on television, even cartoons, or has heard stories about wild animals.

WORD STRATEGIES Try to sound the word out. Think of the sounds you know, think about word families, and/or break the word into syllables (word parts). o For example if the word is spoil and you know the /oi/ sound, it will help you say the word more quickly. MAIN IDEA AND DETAILS The main idea is what the paragraph or whole story is mostly about. The details tell more about the main idea. SUMMARIZING A summary tells the most important details of the book or paragraph in your own words. CAUSE AND EFFECT Very often something happens because of something else that happened. An effect is something that happens because of something else. Some clue word
Because as a result due to since so therefore thus consequently
SEQUENCE OF EVENTS Sequence is the order in which things happen. It also can tell the steps in doing something. Some clue words which show sequence first before Then After next later last finally
MAKING PREDICTIONS A prediction is thinking about what the story, passage, or book will be about. It is also thinking about what will happen next. Before Reading- Read the title, look at the picture on the cover and predict what it will be about. During and After Reading: 1. Think about what has happened so far. 2. Think about the clues that will help you figure out what will happen next. DRAWING CONCLUSIONS A conclusion is an opinion or judgement. MAKING INFERENCES An inference is an educated guess. Steps to make an inference: 1. Think about the clues given in each sentence. 2. Think about your own experience or your prior knowledge. 3. Now make an inference. COMPARE AND CONTRAST When we compare things we tell how they are alike. When we contrast things we tell how they are different. Steps to compare and contrast: 1. Ask yourself, “Are 2 things being compared or contrasted?” 2. Are clue words used to show how things are alike or different? Compare Contrast And Also Too Both similarly but however although though yet
FACT AND OPINION A fact is something you can check to find out if it is true. An opinion tells what a person thinks or feels about something and it can not be proven. AUTHOR’S PURPOSE The author’s purpose is the reason why and author writes something. The three reasons an author writes are to: 1. inform or to explain how to do something 2. to persuade 3. to entertain To Inform – authors write to give information about a topic or authors write to give directions to do something. FANTASY OR REALISTIC FANTASY – a story that could not happen in real life. This genre includes fairy tales, folktales, fables, and science fiction. These are stories of pure imagination. REALISTIC FICTION – A story that could happen in real life. Fiction in which the setting, plot, dialogue, and characters seem real.
CHARACTER’S FEELINGS We can figure out how a person or character feels by what they do and say. Also by the way they look. excited amused worried scared silly nervous
joyful comfortable foolish tired upset lonely
CHARACTER TRAITS Character Traits are words we use to describe what a person is like by what they do and say. Friendly, honest, smart, proud, selfish, lazy, uncooperative, Helpful, thoughtful, wise ,determined, messy, nervous ,thoughtless.. FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Authors use figurative language to make their writing more interesting. They use words which will give the reader good pictures of what is happening in the story so you can make a better “mind movie”.
Comprehension is a complex process that requires students to use multiple cognitive skills, such as auditory processing (Huey, 1908/1968; Anderson,Hiebert, Scott, & Wilkinson, 1984).
Comprehension consists of a variety of strategies that children must know and manipulate in order to understand readings; struggling readers often have difficulty comprehending texts that they are reading because they lack these skills. Although it is also difficult for teachers to teach strategies, according to Dymock (2007).
From the explanation about reading comprehension concepts above, it can be assumed that reading comprehension concepts is reading comprehension concept is a kinds of strategies which children must know and they are able to control or to play in order to understand readings. reading comprehension also a complete process that requires student to thr reading skills.
For example:
Consider this sentence, “Entiendes estas palabras?” If you don't know any of these words, you can read them, but you don't understand any of them--you have no reading comprehension. However, if you speak Spanish and know what the words mean, then you understand--comprehend--the sentence. (By the way, it says, "Do you understand these words?") Harvey (2000 : 1) states that reading comprehension is an interaction between through and language. How far the reader can comprehend the passage in reading process is represented by his ability to understand and to critics the author massage. From Harvey’s definition, it can be concluded that reading comprehension concept is the way how to comprehend and understand about the passage. It can be imagined if the readers just read loudly but cannot understand the content of the passage, it means he/she fails in comprehending the passage. For example in reading comprehension : The name dolphin is originally from ancient Greek, delphys, which means womb. So, the name dolphin means “ a fish with a womb “. Most dolphins are gray, but some species have black stripes, spots or a black part. Dolphins have a streamlined body which has undergone several important and impressive adaptations to swim efficiently in the ocean. That’s why they are hairless, unlike most mammals, because hairs are inconvenient for swimming. Male dolphins are called “ bulls “, females are “ cows “, and young dolphins are called “ calves “. From the passage, the reader can answer some question about the passage below if the readers really understand in reading comprehension concept , 1.What does the name dolphin mean ? 2.What do dolphins have ?

Snow (2002:11) states that reading comprehension as the process of simultaneously extracting and constructing meaning through interaction and involvement with written language. We use the words extracting and constructing to emphasize both the importance and insufficiency of the text as a determinant of reading comprehension. Clara Wong Kee (1997:3) states that reading comprehension is a process of making sense of a written text. However, its not a passive one way decoding process. Instead, it is an active two-way process in which the reader and the text interact. So, it can be assumed that reading comprehension is a complex process to understanding and evaluating the meaning of the words in the text and uses ability to find the information so they should comprehend! it is very easy to understand if we already know the concepts of reading such as : skimming, scanning, previewing, drawing inferences. Comprehension entails three elements: • The reader who is doing the comprehending • The text that is to be comprehended • The activity in which comprehension is part.

Overview of Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI)
By: John T. Guthrie, Angela McRae, and Susan Lutz Klauda (2007) The primary aim of Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) is to increase students' reading comprehension in Grades 3 to 5 by increasing their reading engagement the reading goals include the following comprehension strategies: understanding the main idea, making inferences, monitoring comprehension, and using fix-up strategies for information and narrative texts. We included oral reading fluency and vocabulary as enabling competencies. Another CORI goal in Grades 3 to 5 is to increase students' knowledge of life science in the domain of environmental science CORI's third goal is to increase students' motivation to read, with an emphasis on intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, perceived autonomy, social interaction, and mastery goals in reading. For some studies, the CORI intervention was 12 weeks, and for others it was 36 weeks. Daily instruction for both was 60 to 90 min during the language arts period From the definition, it can be assumed that CORI concept how to increasing reading knowladge of student, in the concept the student learn reading with reading alot. For example: in reading novel, we can give instruction to the student do exercise, with finding the main idea, character, plot, teme, etc.

According to Mayer (2003:34) Reading comprehension are techniques for improving students' success in extracting useful knowledge from text. from that definition,it can be concluded that reading comprehension is one of reading strategy to get the important things and understand the meaning of words, sentences, and paragraphs as well as sense relationship among the ideas from the text. in reading comprehension the readers can create a representation of the text in their mind. for example, when you are in testing situation, and you have to read the statement or passage and then answer the question on the basis of what is implied an the statement or passage.

Rayner, Barbara, Perfetti, David and Mark (Nov, 2001.31-74) state Reading Comprehension is defined as the level of understanding a text. This understanding comes from the interaction between the words that are written and how they trigger knowledge outside the text. From the definition, it can be assumed that Reading Comprehension is used to understand a text by having good knowledge, such as; grammar, vocabulary and etc. For example, from a text there is a question; what does “sneeze” mean?.

Intentional thinking during which meaning is constructed through interactions between text and reader that involves many levels of processing. According to Harris and Hodges (1995) state that reading comprehension is the construction of the meaning of a written text through a reciprocal interchange of ideas between the reader and the message in a particular text. From the definition, it can be assumed that reading comprehension is influenced by a student’s level of word knowledge, which includes vocabulary and spelling skills, as well as the ability to know the words. “Knowing words” involves understanding both the structure and meaning of words at various levels of complexity. For example, Giving students reading devices to look for, such as Inference, Metaphor, Pretext, gives students a means by which to label the elements in the text that give the text extra meaning and rich dynamics. Students will use something like Inferences in order to explore the answer to an inquiry we set up before the unit starts. For instance, for Fahrenheit 451 we will ask, "What is a the mature response to corruption?" Students will aim to answer what maturity is, particularly in relation to Montag (the main character) and others actions.

READING COMPREHENSION CONCEPTS According to Mayer (2005: 34) state that reading comprehension concepts is understanding a text that is read, or the process of "constructing meaning" from a text. Comprehension is a "construction process" because it involves all of the elements of the reading process working together as a text is read to create a representation of the text in the reader's mind. from the definition, it can be assumed that Reading comprehension is the process to develop the understanding from the reading text that is read For example: if we reading a short story, newspaper, etc. we must understanding a text that we read.

Reading Comprehension Concept Reading Comprehension mean According Durkin( 1973.1) Reading Comprehension is The essence of reading active and intentional thinking in which the meaning is constructed through interactions between the test and the reader. According Goldenberg ( p. 317) Comprehension through discussion involves lessons that are "instructional conversations" that create higher-level thinking opportunities for students. The purpose of the discussions are to promote critical and aesthetic thinking about text and encourage full classroom involvement. According to Vivian Thayer, class discussions help students to generate ideas and new questions. Partnership for Reading (2005.1), Reading comprehension is understanding a text that is read, or the process of "constructing meaning" from a text. Comprehension is a "construction process" because it involves all of the elements of the reading process working together as a text is read to create a representation of the text in the reader's mind. Concept of Reading Comprehension One strategy for reading comprehension is the technique called SQ3R. This stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. In order to get an understanding of the text, you should survey the chapters. This consists of quickly looking at the title, headings and any subheadings. Look at any end of chapter questions as well. While surveying, you ask questions about the topics you have scanned.
Example: "What did my teacher say about this chapter?" The next thing is to begin reading. In a chapter book, you would read the majority of the words. In a textbook, just read quickly for the key words. These are words seen in the chapter questions, teacher made questions and in the titles or subtitles of the chapter. After reading a portion or section of the book, recite what you have read out loud. By orally summarizing what you just read it helps to cement the content in your memory. The last technique is to review what you have read again. By writing down key facts from the chapter and reviewing it, you will better understand the information. In My Opinion Reading Comprehension Reading comprehension is techniques for improving students' success in extracting useful knowledge from text, because reading comprehension we mean that he can read accurately and efficiently, so we can get the maximum information from a text with the minimum of misunderstanding. We may also mean that he is able to show his understanding by re-expressing the context of the text, for instance, by writing sentences or paragraphs in answer to questions, or by summarizing the text. Concept of Reading Comprehension Students to predict, summarize, clarify, and ask questions for sections of a text. Using The technique of reading comprehension skills to get more of information such as scanning, skimming, prevewing, and also to had positive outcomes. Beside that to can effective we can use SQ3R. This stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. The Example: when we are read the text, we have some of questions we can use technique of reading comprehension skill such in concepts of reading comprehension above. steve : 2009 state that the comprehension concept is the setting to teaching,in order t make student easy to understand about the text. It also to make student actively in the class. The reading comprehension concepts are identifyng cause and effect relationship, comparing and contrasting, sequencing. 1. Identifying cause : looking for the word that become the fact of the reading text. 2. Effect : to produce a result 3. Compare : the similar words 4. Contrast : the different words 5. Sequencing : the identification of the components from a reading text.

According to Partnership for Reading (2005), Reading comprehension is understanding a text that is read, or the process of "constructing meaning" from a text. Comprehension is a "construction process" because it involves all of the elements of the reading process working together as a text is read to create a representation of the text in the reader's mind. Reading comprehension is also defined as the level of understanding of a text. This understanding comes from the interaction between the words that are written and how they trigger knowledge outside the text. Based on the explanation above, I assume that reading comprehension is “essentially the ability to understand what has been read. There is little point in being able to pronounce the words on a page if the words mean nothing to you. (e.g., the use of headings in science text).

a) Clara Wong Kee (1997: 9) states that reading comprehension is a process of making sense of a written text. However, it is not a passive one-way decoding process. Instead, it is an active two-way process in which the reader and the text interact. The reader tests clues from the text against his knowledge to arrive at an understanding of the text acceptable to the reader. b) As Steve mentioned on the Teaching Reading Page, comprehension is the only reason for reading. Without comprehension, reading is a frustrating, pointless exercise in word calling. It is no exaggeration to say that how well students develop the ability to comprehend what they read has a profound effect on their entire lives. c) Simanjuntak (1998: 4) states that reading comprehension is not just reading with aloud voice but reading is established to understand the meaning of words, sentences, and paragraph as well as sense relationship among the ideas. Whenever a student just read loudly but cannot understand the content of the text, it means that he fails in comprehending the passage. Name : Novalya Layung Sari NO : 36 Jennifer Zimmerman (2012) states that Reading comprehension is essentially the ability to understand what has been read. There is little point in being able to pronounce the words on a page if the words mean nothing to you. You can probably read "Snip tops are fin boggle" because you can decode the sounds in the words, but you can't comprehend it because two of the words are nonsense. People with good reading comprehension use several strategies that help them understand the text. From the text it can be assumed that Reading comprehension means the process to combine prior knowledge and current reading to predict what may happen next in the text or to figure out what a word means by its use in the text. Good comprehension requires that readers can not only determine the main idea, but also themes, secondary ideas and clues as to what will happen next. Jennifer Zimmerman (2012, 1) states that reading comprehension is essentially the ability to understand what has been read. From her definition, it can be assumed that reading comprehension is the process where the readers are able to understand the written text they have read. For example when someone has already read a news, then the other person ask him what it is about and he can answer, it means that he has already fulfill the process of reading comprehension.

Reading comprehension – the process of simultaneously extracting and constructing meaning through interaction and involvement with written language. The words extracting and constructing are used in order to emphasize both the importance and insufficiency of the text as a determinant of reading comprehension. Simply put, reading comprehension can be defined as the act of understanding text and using it to learn more. From that definition it can be assumed that reading comprehension is the reading process of the reader in understanding text. Reading comprehension - techniques for improving students' success in extracting useful knowledge from text (Mayer, p 34)
ReplyDeleteWays to teach comprehension based on Bloom's Taxonomy include concept maps, analogies, inquiry and expository strategies.
Concept Maps
• Concept maps, which are sometimes referred to as ideas and/or concepts. Assist in organizing knowledge.
For example, students learning about how apples grow. Students may make concept and linking with the apple trees, soil, sunlight, rain and fertilizer.
Analogies
• Analogies transfer meaning from something that a person already knows to new knowledge, which aids in comprehension.
For example, students who already know how flowers grow. Students may compare the way flowers grow with the way that apples grow, such as flowers bud from seeds/bulbs as apples grow from trees that begin from seeds.
Inquiry
• The inquiry strategy, which is sometimes referred to as discovery, allows to generate own comprehension.
For example, students learning about how flowers grow and the students may choose seeds or bulbs, soil, fertilizers, sunlight and the water to discover by themselves how different types of flowers grow and to adapt their environment.
Expository
• The expository strategy is similar to inquiry or discovery; however, rather than students generating their own comprehension, the instructor presents the concept and leads students through the activity.
For example, an instructor teaching about flower growth would explain the concept, present examples and supply students with seeds or bulbs, soil and so on; it is a controlled environment.

The explanation of reading comprehension concepts according to Ann Logsdon Reading comprehension is strategies to understand students’ read and to remember details of what they've read.
In my opinion reading comprehension is refers to student’s ability to understand the information he is reading.
Understanding requires that we know the words (vocabulary) and the concepts (or meaning) behind the words.
Examples:
Consider this sentence, ¿Entiendes estas palabras? If you don't know any of these words, you can read them, but you don't understand any of them--you have no reading comprehension.
However, if you speak Spanish and know what the words mean, then you understand--comprehend--the sentence. (By the way, it says, "Do you understand these words?")
Talking with your student and reading to them builds vocabulary.

WORD STRATEGIES
Try to sound the word out. Think of the sounds you know, think about word
families, and/or break the word into syllables (word parts).
o For example if the word is spoil and you know the /oi/ sound, it will help you say
the word more quickly.

A prediction is thinking about what the story, passage, or book will be about.
It is also thinking about what will happen next.
Before Reading- Read the title, look at the picture on the cover and predict what
it will be about.
During and After Reading:
1. Think about what has happened so far.
2. Think about the clues that will help you figure out what will happen next.
DRAWING CONCLUSIONS

2. to persuade
3. to entertain
To Inform – authors write to give information about a topic or
authors write to give directions to do something.
FANTASY OR REALISTIC
FANTASY – a story that could not happen in real life. This genre
includes fairy tales, folktales, fables, and science fiction. These are
stories of pure imagination.
REALISTIC FICTION – A story that could happen in real life.
Fiction in which the setting, plot, dialogue, and characters seem real.
CHARACTER’S FEELINGS
We can figure out how a person or character feels by what they do and say.
Also by the way they look.
excited amused worried scared silly nervous
joyful comfortable foolish tired upset lonely
CHARACTER TRAITS
Character Traits are words we use to describe what a person is like by what they do and say.
Friendly, honest, smart, proud, selfish, lazy, uncooperative,
Helpful, thoughtful, wise ,determined, messy, nervous ,thoughtless..
FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
Authors use figurative language to make their writing more interesting. They use
words which will give the reader good pictures of what is happening in the story
so you can make a better “mind movie”.

Comprehension is a complex process that requires students to use multiple cognitive skills, such
as auditory processing (Huey, 1908/1968; Anderson,Hiebert, Scott, & Wilkinson, 1984).
(By the way, it says, "Do you understand these words?")
Talking with your student and reading to them builds vocabulary. Point out words that they will recognize—on signs, in books or newspapers. Pick a “word of the day” and see how many times your child can find the special word for the day.

Reading Comprehension concept
Gough and Tunmer (1986, 228) states that reading comprehension is the joint product of printed word identiļ¬cation and listening comprehension. From the definition, It can be assumed that reading comprehension is the ability to understand relationship between information in a text and listening comprehension. For example, in reading, a child has never been to the zoo, but the concept of a zoo can be an easy one for a child who has seen wild animals on television, even cartoons, or has heard stories about wild animals

Harvey (2000 : 1) states that reading comprehension is an interaction between through and language. For example in reading comprehension :
The name dolphin is originally from ancient Greek, delphys, which means womb.
From the passage, the reader can answer some question about the passage below if the readers really understand in reading comprehension concept ,
1.What does the name dolphin mean ?
2.What do dolphins have ?

Snow (2002:11) states that reading
comprehension as the process of
simultaneously
extracting and constructing meaning
through interaction and involvement
with written language. We use the
words extracting and constructing to
emphasize both the importance and
insufficiency of the text as a
determinant
of reading comprehension.
Clara Wong Kee (1997:3) states that
reading comprehension is a process of
making sense of a written text.
However, its not a passive one way
decoding process. Instead, it is an active
two-way process in which the reader
and the text interact. So, it can be
assumed that reading comprehension is
a complex process to understanding
and evaluating the meaning of the
words in the text and uses ability to find
the information so they should
comprehend! it is very easy to
understand if we already know the
concepts of reading such as : skimming,
scanning, previewing, drawing
inferences.
Comprehension entails three elements:
• The reader who is doing the
comprehending
• The text that is to be comprehended
• The activity in which comprehension is
part.

a) Clara Wong Kee (1997: 9) states that reading comprehension is a process of making sense of a written text. However, it is not a passive one-way decoding process. Instead, it is an active two-way process in which the reader and the text interact ie. the reader tests clues from the text against his knowledge to arrive at an understanding of the text acceptable to the reader.
b) Eksay in Amir (2004: 6) states, “Reading comprehension in general is viewed in this research as the resulting from the four way interaction between readers, text, task, structured activity. The success of this interaction depends of the availability of quality of content and strategist schemata to new problem solving situations.
c) Simanjuntak (1998: 4) states that reading comprehension is not just reading with aloud voice but reading is established to understand the meaning of words, sentences, and paragraph as well as sense relationship among the ideas. Whenever a student just read loudly but cannot understand the content of the text, it means that he fails in comprehending the passage.
From the definition, it can be assumed that reading comprehension is essentially the ability to understand what has been read.

Overview of Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI)
By: John T. Guthrie, Angela McRae, and Susan Lutz Klauda (2007)
The primary aim of Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) is to increase students' reading comprehension in Grades 3 to 5 by increasing their reading engagement
the reading goals include the following comprehension strategies: understanding the main idea, making inferences, monitoring comprehension, and using fix-up strategies for information and narrative texts. We included oral reading fluency and vocabulary as enabling competencies.
Another CORI goal in Grades 3 to 5 is to increase students' knowledge of life science in the domain of environmental science
CORI's third goal is to increase students' motivation to read, with an emphasis on intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, perceived autonomy, social interaction, and mastery goals in reading. For some studies, the CORI intervention was 12 weeks, and for others it was 36 weeks. Daily instruction for both was 60 to 90 min during the language arts period
From the definition, it can be assumed that CORI concept how to increasing reading knowladge of student, in the concept the student learn reading with reading alot. For example: in reading novel, we can give instruction to the student do exercise, with finding the main idea, character, plot, teme, etc.

IV. Reading Comprehension Concepts

Reading Comprehension Concepts
According to Durkin (1993) states that reading comprehension is
a. The essence of reading.

READING COMPREHENSION CONCEPTS
According to Mayer (2005: 34) state that reading comprehension concepts is understanding a text that is read, or the process of "constructing meaning" from a text.

Reading Comprehension Concept
Reading Comprehension mean
According Durkin( 1973.1) Reading Comprehension is The essence of reading active and intentional thinking in which the meaning is constructed through interactions between the test and the reader.
Concept of Reading Comprehension
One strategy for reading comprehension is the technique called SQ3R. This stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. In order to get an understanding of the text, you should survey the chapters. This consists of quickly looking at the title, headings and any subheadings. Look at any end of chapter questions as well. While surveying, you ask questions about the topics you have scanned.
Example: "What did my teacher say about this chapter?"
The next thing is to begin reading.
In My Opinion
Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension is techniques for improving students' success in extracting useful knowledge from text, because reading comprehension we mean that he can read accurately and efficiently, so we can get the maximum information from a text with the minimum of misunderstanding. We may also mean that he is able to show his understanding by re-expressing the context of the text, for instance, by writing sentences or paragraphs in answer to questions, or by summarizing the text.
Concept of Reading Comprehension
Students to predict, summarize, clarify, and ask questions for sections of a text.

According to Grellet and Friends (1990: 3) says, “Reading comprehension is to understand written text means extracting the required information from it as efficient as possible.” And arranges some skills in reading comprehension, there are:
Acquisition of a rich, extensive and accurate vocabulary; ability to grasp the meaning of units of increasing size, phrase, sentence, paragraph, whole selection; ability to find answer to specific question; ability to select and understand main ideas, ability to understand a sequence of events; ability to note and recall details, ability to grasp the organization of the author’s plan, ability to follow directions accurately, ability to evaluate what one reads, ability to remember what one has read.
From the definition, it can be assumed that skill in reading comprehension is not only to get the accurate meaning of a text, but also to get what for the text is written, and also the reader can remember what one has read to support the reader has good understanding in the text.

The reading comprehension concepts are identifyng cause and effect relationship, comparing and contrasting, sequencing.
1. Identifying cause : looking for the word that become the fact of the reading text.
2. Effect : to produce a result
3. Compare : the similar words
4. Contrast : the different words

Heaton, J.B ( 1988) states that reading comprehension concept is very closely related to the type of practice material used by the teacher to develop the reading skills. It can be assumed that reading comprehension is a phase or process to face a reading test and there is interaction between the text and the readers. E. g : reading test for TOEFL.

(e.g., the use of headings in science text).

reading comprehension is a process of

However, its not a passive one way

From the definition, it can be assumed that reading comprehension is reading technique that if we read we are not just reading loudly but also we must understand the content of the text or passage. For example : For material to use in teaching this skill.

a) Clara Wong Kee (1997: 9) states that reading comprehension is a process of making sense of a written text.
From the definition, it can be assumed that reading comprehension is the level of understanding of a text or the essence of reading

III. THE CONCEPTS OF READING COMPREHENSION
According to Durkin (1973: 1) states that comprehension is the complex cognitive process involving the intentional interaction between reader and text to extract meaning. The Concepts of Comprehension is used by Permission., as a means of helping educators teach reading-comprehension skills-explicitly, simply, and clearly. It can be assumed that teaching students how to infer meaning from text is the foundation of good reading-comprehension instruction. The research-based Concepts provide a clear and consistent structure that makes it possible to teach these essential skills across all grade levels. For example: Explicit Information is information that can be clearly found “right there” in the text. Explicit information questions enable you to assess students’ reading comprehension. After reading a story, ask students to answer questions based on information that can be found in the text. Invite them to look back to the text for the answers. Ask: Where can you find that answer in the story? Have students tell you (or highlight or point out) where they found the answer.

Jennifer Zimmerman (2012) states that Reading comprehension is essentially the ability to understand what has been read. Example : cookbook

READING COMPREHENSION CONCEPTS
Dessalines Floyd (May, 2011. 1) explained that Reading comprehension is a very dynamic process that increases with effective strategy instruction.
For example: Analyzing and Critiquing the texts
