Someone has understood the novel and knew better the novel when he/she is able to think about the rule of the novel and be able to retell the content of the novel by his/her own sentences. There are five steps in applying PRE-DVG strategy in reading novel.

Those steps consist of:

Predict.
Flip through the first section of the novel and look for a short piece of dialogue or text. Predict what was happened. Revisit your thoughts when you get to that piece.

Read
Read the whole novel to get an idea of what the novel describes and tells us about. You might find it helpful to whisper the words while you read to get a picture in your mind of what you are reading. Once you have a main idea of what the paragraph is about.

Examine
Examine each sentence or paragraph in a novel to identify the important words that tell what the sentence is about. Ignore the words that are not needed to tell you what the sentence is about. If you are allowed, draw a lone through the words that should be ignored. For each sentence, write on a sheet of paper the words that tell you what the sentence is about.

 Decide
Reread the words you wrote for each sentence in the novel. Decide which sentence has the words that you wrote that describe the main idea for the novel. These words are the main idea of the novel. The sentence that has these words is the topic sentence. The other words you wrote are the supporting details for the main idea. This step may help you to answer the questions if there will be some question about the novel that you’ve been read.

Visualize

Turn on the movie projector in your head. Take a minute during the action to visualize what is happening and what the characters look like.

Gossip about It
Get a group together of other students who are reading the same novel. By discussing the novel you will get the deeper understanding of what happened and what there is to learn from it. Keep a list questions you had while you read and bring them to the group. If the conversation stops, have a ‘gossip session’ discussing the characters, what’s wrong with them and what they should have done differently.

After doing those strategies, the teacher can see the ability of each student in reading novels. It’s the long story to read but by using the strategy, student can get the better understanding in reading novels.
