Skimming is used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text. When you read the newspaper, you're probably not reading it word-by-word, instead you're scanning the text. Skimming is done at a speed three to four times faster than normal reading. People often skim when they have lots of material to read in a limited amount of time. Use skimming when you want to see if an article may be of interest in your research.

There are many strategies that can be used when skimming. Some people read the first and last paragraphs using headings, summarizes and other organizers as they move down the page or screen. You might read the title, subtitles, subheading, and illustrations. Consider reading the first sentence of each paragraph. This technique is useful when you're seeking specific information rather than reading for comprehension. Skimming works well to find dates, names, and places. It might be used to review graphs, tables, and charts.

Scanning is a technique you often use when looking up a word in the telephone book or dictionary. You search for key words or ideas. In most cases, you know what you're looking for, so you're concentrating on finding a particular answer. Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases. Scanning is also used when you first find a resource to determine whether it will answer your questions. Once you've scanned the document, you might go back and skim it.

When scanning, look for the author's use of organizers such as numbers, letters, steps, or the words, first, second, or next. Look for words that are bold faced, italics, or in a different font size, style, or color. Sometimes the author will put key ideas in the margin.

Reading off a computer screen has become a growing concern. Research shows that people have more difficulty reading off a computer screen than off paper. Although they can read and comprehend at the same rate as paper, skimming on the computer is much slower than on paper

Skimming : The kind of technique we use when reading a newspaper or magazine. Skimming is used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text.
In skimming we don’t know we are looking for yet but we want to know what the text is about, to see if it is of interest. It’s a personal decision, but what I usually do is to read the heading or subheading and check the illustrations and images, if any. Then I read the first and last lines of each paragraph.
Skimming is a tool in which the author's sequence can be observed, unlike scanning in which some predetermined information is sought after.
And I think skimming is a more complex task than scanning because it requires the reader to organize and remember some of the information given by the author, not just to locate it.

    • Scanning
Scanning is a reading technique to be used when you want to find specific information quickly.
In scanning you know what you are looking for so you are searching for that keyword or idea (you expect to find); i.e. you’re focused on finding a particular answer.
And I think scanning involves quick eye movements, not necessarily linear in fashion, in which the eyes wander until the reader finds the piece of information needed and it’s also used when a specific piece of information is required, such as a name, date, symbol, formula, or phrase, is required. The reader knows what the item looks like and so, knows when he has located what he was searching for. It is assumed then, that very little information is processed into long-term memory or even for immediate understanding because the objective is simply matching.

-Skimming builds on the strategy of predicting and is used to gain a general overview of the article's main ideas, structure and argument before you read it in detail. It also helps you to decide if a text is appropriate to read for your purpose and to determine how much and what you should read more intensively.

In skimming an article you may quickly read the title, the abstract, the main headings, the introduction, the first sentence of each paragraph and the conclusion. This may take you 5-10 minutes but it is time well spent. You will have built up a good mental picture of the article and be well prepared for more intensive reading.

-Scanning is used to locate specific information very quickly. For example, you may want to find a definition of a key term or if the research of a certain author or group of authors is reviewed. Let your eyes wander over the text without reading every word until you find the information you are looking for. Scanning can be used during the early stages of reading and researching as well as during the later stages to clarify specific points.

    >>Skimming reading strategy is a reading quickly for get the poin or the main ideas of the paragraph. We can just read the first and the last sentence of the paragraph for get main ideas, because the main ideas of the paragraph sometimes locate in the first or last sentence of the paragraph. We can use skimming reading strategy when we read newspaper for get the main poin/idea of the teks quickly, because there are so many teks in the newspaper.

    >>Scanning reading strategy is a reading to find information quickly, but in this case, we don't read every sentence, we can look quickly for the important word, headings, diagrams, or boxed/highlighted
items that might help you get the information to find one specific detail. Scanning strategy usually use when we will answer the question from the text which we read or when we try to find word in the dictionary.

that is my opinion about Skimming and Scanning reading strategy, thank you sir.

    Skimming
Skimming is the process of quickly viewing a section of text to get a general impression of the author's main argument, themes or ideas. There are three types of skimming: preview, overview, and review.
    Preview skimming
Most often followed by a second skimming or a thorough reading, preview skimming is used
    • in selecting a book
    • in surveying a chapter before reading or studying
    • in finding appropriate material for use in research
    • in sorting through correspondence before answering it

    Scanning
Scan to quickly locate specific information: words, numbers, names, ideas, or the answers to specific study questions.
    Method
    • Fix clearly in your mind what you are looking for.
    • Anticipate how the information will look.
    • Run your finger down the middle of the page or backward and forwards across the page. Let your eyes follow this seeking the particular target.
    Examples
    • Looking for names, places or titles: look for the visual clue provided by capital letters.
    • Looking for distances or a date: look for the visual clue provided by numbers, or words such as miles, metres, minutes or hours.
    • Looking for an idea: anticipate the words that could be used to state it.
    • Looking for a relationship: may be expressed after such clue words as ‘thus’, ‘consequently’, or ‘as a result’.

Skimming - reading just those parts of a text that are most likely to indicate what the authors are talking about at different points in order to gain an overview of the content. It’s means that used to quickly identify the main ideas of a text. There are many strategies that can be used when skimming. Some people read the first and last paragraph using headings, summarizes. This technique is useful when you’re seeking specific information rather than reading for comprehension . Skimming is useful when you want to survey a text to get a general idea of what it is about. In skimming you ignore the details and look for the main ideas. Main ideas are usually found in the first sentences of each paragraph and in the first and last paragraphs. It is also useful to pay attention to the organisation of the text.
As reading is an interactive process, you have to work at constructing the meaning of the text from the marks on the paper. You need to be active all the time when you are reading. It is useful, therefore, if you need to read the text in detail, before you start reading to activate the knowledge you have about the topic of the text and to formulate questions based on this information. Skimming a text for gist can help you formulate questions to keep you interacting with the text.

Scanning : reading the text fairly quickly in order to understand the topic and the main point. looking through a text to find keywords and phrases that are likely to indicate the specific information that you are seeking, then reading just this piece of the tex. It is a technique you often use when looking up a word in the telephone book or dictionary. Similarly, scanning skills are valuable for several purposes in studying science. First, they are an aid in locating new terms, which are introduced in the chapter. Unless you understand the new terms, it is impossible to follow the author's reasoning without dictionary or glossary. Thus a preliminary scanning of the chapters will alert you to the new terms and concepts and their sequence. When you locate a new term, try to find its definition. If you are not able to figure out the meaning, then look it up in the glossary or dictionary. Secondly, scanning is useful in locating statements, definitions, formulas, etc. which you must remember completely and precisely. Scan to find the exact and complete statement of a chemical law., the formula of a particular compound in chemistry, or the stages of cell division. Also, scan the charts and figures, for they usually summarize in graphic form the major ideas and facts of the chapter.

Suppose that while reading a story or essay, with a wish to know quickly what the core or the main idea of the story that we read it from a common part of the story and the fist or the end of the paragraph. This technique is useful when we are looking for specific information rather than reading for comprehension Some situations require the use of skimming are:
    1. check out a chapter in the book prior to study them seriously in order to obtain ageneral idea of the scope of the chapter.
    2. make few pages of a novel or written other types to determine whether the paper is worth reading.

    4. examine the literature to assess whether the text contains the type of informationwe're looking for.
    5. examined the literature to determine whether the text can be understood or is too difficult

    SCANNING:
Scanning is a fast reading techniques are often used when searching for an address or phone number and also the vocabulary contained in the dictionary. In scanning makes our eyes work faster because to find words or phrases that we seek. During the move the eye quickly see the overall reading material, the reader does not absorb the meaning but simply to recognize that things are looking, it seemed as clear as if in bold. Some people can reach speeds of almost incredible that in doing the scanning.
In the daily life of another scanning used for:

  13. Skimming is a mode of fast reading to get the main idea of a text. There are many strategies that can be used when skimming. Some people read the first and last paragraphs using headings, summarizes and other organizers. if the text you are reading is a non-fictional text, you may first look at its table of contents, the summary, and subject index. If the text is a fictional text, you may decide to first read the opening scene and the beginning or ending of chapters.
    How to Skim:
    1. Read the title.
    2. Read the introduction or the first paragraph.
    3. Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.
    4. Read any headings and sub-headings.
    5. Notice any pictures, charts, or graphs.
    6. Notice any italicized or boldface words or phrases.
    7. Read the summary or last paragraph.

Scanning is a mode of fast reading, use keywords to find the information. In scanning you have a question in your mind you know what you're looking for, so you're concentrating on finding a particular answer. Scanning involves moving your eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases.

    How to Scan:
    1. State the specific information you are looking for.
    2. Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what clues you might use to help you locate the answer. For example, if you were looking for a certain date, you would quickly read the paragraph looking only for numbers.
    3. Use headings and any other aids that will help you identify which sections might contain the information you are looking for.
    4. Selectively read and skip through sections of the passage.

Scanning : is one of ways of reading quickly to get the specific information and actually when we do the scanning our mind have concept before to find out something or we have the certain purpose.
For example : when we are looking for our name in list of names, actually we focus in our name only and we ignore the other names, when we looking for a specific name in the telephone index, finding a place in a map or we want to find the meaning of the certain word in dictionary. The other example of scanning is when we want to find out the answer of the question from the text.

Skimming : is one of ways of reading quickly to get the main idea of a text or to get a general idea of the meaning.
For example : when we read the newspaper, we might very quickly skim the stories to see if the information like something we would like to read in more detail. The other example is when we want to know what the news is about or when we read a novel or the other story.

  15. 1. Scanning means knowing what information you need to find before you read.

You have something in your mind, your eyes, then, move quickly to find that particular information. You scan when you are looking for a fact or a detail or a particular vocabulary word. When you are scanning, you don’t have to read every word to answer the questions and don’t have understand every word.

    2. Skimming means reading quickly for general meaning.

You skim reading material to find out about topic, the main idea, and generic structure of passage. For this kind of reading, you only want to find out something and don’t want to know and memorize everything you read. In fact, you should leave out everything except a few important words. There are the words that tell you the general idea.

Skimming is reading the text very quickly for the main idea of the text. Below you will find suggestions for ways to skim.

When you skim, you are looking for the meaning of the text, not for a complete understanding of the text. This means that you need to look at the topic sentences of each paragraph, and the subject, verb and object of the sentences.

Scanning is when you look for specific details in the text, without skimming or reading for the meaning. You use this technique when you are looking for the answer to a question. You will look for the keyword in the question (or a synonym) so you can locate the answer.

skimming is defined as a selective reading technique used to obtain important ideas when complete detailed information is not required, while scanning is defined as a process of rapidly locating information in printed material.
The skimming process is described as containing key actions: reading the title and subtitle, headings, introductions, first sentences in paragraphs, key words, graphic elements, and final paragraphs. The three general types of skimming that are discussed are previewing, overviewing, and reviewing.

Scanning a text is a reading technique where the reader looks for specific information rather than trying to absorb all the information. If you're reading a timetable, say, you want specific information usually and so look for something that is convenient for your journey plans- when you do this, you are scanning.

Scanning a text is a reading technique where the reader looks for specific information rather than trying to absorb all the information. If you're reading a timetable, say, you want specific information usually and so look for something that is convenient for your journey plans- when you do this, you are scanning.

      SKIMMING AND SCANNING

Scanning involves a process of quickly searching reading materials in order to locate specific bits of information. When scanning you don't start from the beginning
      and read to the end.
Example of scanning: when we scan the TV guide, the phone book,
or the dictionary, but it is possible to improve your scanning skills.
Skimming is another technique whose purpose is to gain a quick overview
in order to identify the main points. When skimming, you will often skip words,
      sentences, and paragraphs.
      Examples of Skimming:
      • The Newspaper (quickly to get the general news of the day)
      • Magazines (quickly to discover which articles you would like to read in more detail)
      • Business and Travel Brochures (quickly to get informed)

Skimming is used to get the main idea of a text. To find out whether an article in accordance with what we are looking for. To assess the article, is interesting to read further in detail. Speed reading is skimming is usually about three or four times faster than normal reading. Some steps to skimming is reading from beginning and last of the text. Don’t read word by word , watch the illustration of a picture in order to obtain easier information for us in this subject. And the last understanding the meaning of the text. Examples are skimming to get the main idea of a page of text books, so that they can decide whether the book is useful and should be read more slowly and in detail.

Scanning is used to obtain specific information from a text. Typically, this is done if you already know exactly what you're looking to concentrate on looking for specific answers. Scanning is also associated with rapid eye move into other parts of a particular page to search for specific words and phrases. Some steps from scanning is Note the use of sequence such as numbers, etter, step, first, second, or next. Look up the word in bold, italics or different from other text and sometimes the writers put the keyword in paragraph boundaries. Examples are scanning to find specific numbers in telephone directories, city in the dictionary.

    SCANNING AND SKIMMING

    >> Scanning is a very quick read where when someone reads scans, he will surpass a lot of words and find specific information quickly and accurately and be used to obtain specific information from a text.

    Scanning steps:

    - Note the use of sequence-like 'figure', 'letter', 'step', 'first',
    'second', or 'next'.
    - Look up the word in bold, italics or different from other text printed.
    - Sometimes the writer to place keywords in a paragraph boundary.

    Scanning is done by:

    (1) Moving the eye like an arrow straight downward slide find the
    information that has been established,
    (2) Having found the pace slowed to find a complete description of the
    information sought, and
    (3) Readers are required to have a good understanding of the
characteristics associated with the read (eg, dictionary
alphabetically arranged and there is a keyword in the upper right of
every page, alphabetically arranged encyclopedia with a reversal for a
term consisting of two words, and so on).

The purpose of scanning read as follows:

    • Searching for information in the book quickly,
    • Scanning is a fast reading techniques to discover information that the
    reader has been determined,
    • The reader has to determine the search prior to scanning is done, the
reader does not read the other parts of the text unless the information
    sought.
    • Obtain specific information from a text. Typically, this is done if you
already know exactly what you're looking to concentrate on looking for
    specific answers.

    >> Skimming is scanned or read quickly to get any information from which we read. Skimming quickly carried to the general reading in the literature and the reading process is done by looking at the jump points in mind the main theme of the reading material while understanding the magnitude and involving visual search for the words from a page of instructions for a meaning.

    Skimming steps :

    • Read the title, sub title and subheading to find out what you talk about
    the text.
    • Note the illustration (drawing or photographs) that you get more
    information about the topic.
    • Read the beginning and end of the sentence of each paragraph.
    • Do not read word for word. Let your eyes do skimming the outer skin of a
    text.Look for keywords.
    • Continue to think about the meaning of the text.

I think scanning is reading the text to get the information and then to get the point or answer from that information

Skimming is quick reading technique to read a clear manner and without prejudice to the meaning of the text. example is when we read texts, newspapers, or the other. in a quick read as there are several techniques we can identify which of those words without reducing the meaning of those words.

scanning the same reading with speed reading. more priority to scanning speed reading eye in the search for such objects that we are headed if we look hard words in the dictionary, we must know what the key words of the word because if we do not know of these keywords so the city will find it hard to know what the word we find it.

    My opinion Skimming and Scanning

SKIMMING is a process of speed reading that involves usually searching the sentences of a page for does to meaning. And running the eyes over quickly, to get the gist. ( my opinion )

Skimming is use to quickly identify the main idea of the text. When you read the news paper, you are probably not reading it word by word instead you are scanning text.
There are many strategies skimming :
    - some people read the first and last paragraph using reading,
    - summaries,
    - other organizer as they more down the page or screen.
    - consider reading the first sentence of each paragraph.
    - skimming work well to find dates, name, and places.

SCANNING is a reader technique where the reader look for specific informmation rather than trying to absorb all the information. ( my opinio )

    My Opinion Skimming and Scanning

Skimming and Scanning are two specific speed-reading tehniques, which enable you to cover a vast amount of material very rapidly. these tehniques are similar in process but different in purpose. Quickly " Looking over " an article is neither skimming nor scanning. Both require specific steps to be followed.

SKIMMING is a Method of rapidly moving the eyes over text with the purpose of getting only the main ideas and a general overview of the content.
    a) Skimming is useful in three different situations.
    - Pre-reading- skimming is more through than simple previewing and can give a more accurate picture of text to be read later.
    - Reviewing - Skimming is useful for reviewing text already read.
    - Reading - Skimming is most often used for quickly reading material that, for any number of reasons, does not need more detailed attetion.

    b) Steps in skimming an article
    - Read the title - it is the shortest possible summary of the cotent
    - Read the introduction or lead in paragraph
    - Read the first paragraph completely
    - if there are subheadings, reach each one, looking for relationships among them
    - Read the first sentence of each remaining paragraph :
    a. the main idea of most paragraphs appears in the first sentence.
    b. if the author's pattern is to begin with a question or anecdote,
you may find the lat sentence more valuable
    c. Dip into the text looking for :
    - Clue words that answer who, what, when, why, how
    - Proper nouns
    - Unusual words, especially if capitalized
    - Enumerations
    - Qualifying adjectives ( best, worst, most , etc )
    - Typographical cues, italic, boldface, underlining, asterisks, etc.
    d. Read the final paragraph completely

    c) Mastering the art of skimming effectively requires that you use it as frequently as possible.

d)Skimming can usually be accomplished at about 1000 words per minute.

SCANNING is rapidly covers a great deal of material in order to locate a specific fact or piece of information

    a) Scanning is very useful for finding a specific name, date, statistic,
or fact without reading the entire article.

    b) Steps in scanning an article
    - Keep in mid at all times what it is you are searching for. if you
hold the image of the word or idea clearly in mind, it is likely to
appear more clearly that the surrounding words.
    - Anticipate in what from the information i likely to appear numbers,
    proper noun, etc
    - Analyze the organization of the content before starting to scan
    a. if material is familiar or fairly brief, you may be able to scan
the entire article in a single search.
    b. if the material is lengthy or difficult,a preliminary skimming may
be necessary to determine which part of the article to scan.
    - let your eyes run rapidly over several lines of print at a time.
    - when you find the sentence that has the information you seek, read
    the entire sentence.

    c) In scanning, you must be willing to skip over large sections of text
    without reading or understanding them.
    d) Scanning can be done at 1500 or more words per minute.

1.Skimming is one of methods of reading that is a process of speed reading that involves visually searching the sentences of a page for clues to meaning.Skimming reading also useful when we want to survey a text to get a general idea of what it is about.

2.Scanning is a technique that us often use when looking up a word in the telephone book or dictionary.Scanning involves moving our eyes quickly down the page seeking specific words and phrases. Scanning is also used when we first find a resource to determine whether it will answer our questions. Once we've scanned the document, you might go back and skim it.
